Throughout the week, dani has traversed the city, looking for signs of oddity and disruption, though if she can she returns to the fountain once if not twice a day. Since Garin has identified it as a magic magnifier, she's been trying to assesses if her magic is stronger near the fountain and analyze with both pattern and magic senses

Danielle rolls with advantage 1 at difficulty 20, using occult, magic sense.
The result is a success.

There is an oddity there, one which she can pick out through careful experimentation. The magic is not much different unless she casts something through, or across, or very near the fountain. It's responsible for a very localised effect, if a small one. The effect extends a little uphill, however, and peaks again towards the alternative water supply that Filinia tapped off the main one, when the fountain froze.

Danielle purses her lips as she moves toward the alternate tap. She reaches out again, this time with he sense of the pattern, as limited and ephemeral as as it seems to be

Dirk walks over to the fountain and looks at Danielle. He stays where she isn't looking straight at him.

Danielle rolls with advantage 1 at difficulty 20, using occult, pattern meditation.
The result is a success.

The oddness, for Danielle, continues. There is no influence here but the Pattern, that she can tell, and yet it feels different to elsewhere in the city. More alive and vibrant, perhaps? And then distantly Dirk's presence makes itself felt, a concise example of Pattern and age and sand.

Dirk rolls with advantage -1 at difficulty 15, using no talents or gifts.
The result is a success.

Dirk can see, uphill of the square, a gang of Unicorn Cultists listening to the young bald-headed preacher who sometimes leads them.

Dirk looks up and puts himself between Dani and the cultists. He starts to watch them carefully.

In Danielle's vision, the thing that is Dirk circles her sunwise, a third to a half of the way, and takes up position there.

The cultists are listening to the young man, and then Dirk sees another group - this one armed with clubs and knives - walking along the inside of the square, close to the wall. They're heading towards the street uphill, where the preacher is. All of his instincts say 'gang war'.

Dirk says "Heads up Buttercup!" to the Unicorn cultists!

There's a single person at the edge of the group who hears, but that's enough. He nudges a friend, the friend looks as well, and then the preacher does, and that's enough to make everyone in the group pay attention. They're staring at Dirk as the other gang comes around the corner. It might be about to get very very wild.

Suddenly Dirk is more interstng than the fountain. Even though both places rediate difference, the difference surrounding the fountain is slightly less of a shock in that respect. the difference in dirk totally unexpected and so she follows at a distance

Dirk says "Dude! There is a gang sneaking up on you!"

And, to Danielle, there's another shock. Beyond Dirk, just at the limits of her inner sense, there's much, much more of the feeling of the Pattern and movement. Her eyes say it's just people in ordinary clothes, with white and gold horns painted or tattooed on. Her inner understanding says it's the same as the area where Filinia made the second pipe.

The unicorn cultists closest to the gang all look up at the preacher, who steps down to walk, unarmed, towards the attackers. Maybe that wasn't what Dirk meant to happen, but it's what happens.

Danielle stands somewhat bewildered but she makes effort to train both eyes and thoughts on the preacher himself hoping to isolate his connection to the pattern and whatever action he's about to take

Dirk skips along towards the gathering doom. He seems so happy to get a chance to fight.

The young preacher stands in front of the mob, who do not hesitate. Dirk closes in rapidly. It might all be down to him.

It is hard to use a sense designed for careful thought over minutes or hours, to keep track here. Nevertheless, Danielle can get a little bit - the Pattern, the sense of new moving, the oldness and sand that marks Dirk - they all flow into one another.

Dirk rolls with advantage 1 at difficulty 20, using combat, combat trained.
The result is a failure.

The unicorn cultists stay back, some on the edges drawing weapons. They number more than the attacking gang, but most look like the are not natural fighters. Those who are closing in look like they were born to violence.

Danielle rolls with advantage 1 at difficulty 20, using occult, pattern meditation.
The result is a success.

Dirk gets close and starts to preparatory fight. He sings a rude song about Prince Caine at the top of his lungs.

Of course Dirk gets up to the group - it's getting to the front of it that's a problem. Even as he is opening his mouth to advertise the Admiral's finer parts, people are turning to face him.

As always when there is trouble in or near the square, the market starts to pack up in a hurry.

Danielle just blinks as she watches the fight flow back and forh trying to puzzle out the odd relationship of this rather gruesume dance she's watvhing. under different circumstance, she might intersperse herself to halt the altercation but she's two transfixed. "makes no sense"

Dirk starts to sing louder about Caine and Dirk's mother. He says "please let me through"

He gets someone swinging at him in return, and then the mob reaches the preacher, and someone swings a club - and the club shatters on the young man, who smiles, and lifts his hand in a benediction.

Then Dirk's going to have to defend himself, and he doesn't have time to see more.

On the other hand, Danielle sees the man with a club fall, clutching his arm.

Dirk defends himself with his sword and is having the kind of time that would get you flogged in the navy.

It's not a difficult fight - but he can't break through to help the Unicorn cultists.

Danielle, from further away, sees another two people attack the preacher. Both have knives. The knives skitter from their hands. Then Dirk's work in the middle of the mob sees them running away, and that's it - they lost. Just like that.

Danielle blinks "The pattern is somehow influenced by the action of the cultist and he knows how it works more than the others" She closes the space to the preacher "The power of the unicorn is with you? How did it come to bless you so?"

Dirk chases down the runners.

The preacher looks at Daneille, and smiles. "I heard the words that Kyrie said," he replies, "And they are right. The Unicorn is with us." He has grazes where the weapons struck, and no more.

Those running are given haste by fear, but Dirk still gets to catch up with a man who didn't get a good head-start.

Dirk picks the guy up and yells "what the he'll dude?"

Now that Danielle is close, and trying to talk as well as concentrate, her picture of the mystical world is starting to fall apart. Nevertheless, this area here, right now, is strong in that sense of pattern and movement.

"Arrrrrgggghhhh!!! Put me down put me down put me down!" is Dirk's reply.

Dirk says 'No." and carries the guy back. "why do you attack the cultists?"

"Those bastards keep coming in on our territory," the man snarls as he is held. "It's just business!"

Dirk says "I am putting them under my protection. Mess with them and I'll hunt you down."

Danielle makes no attempt to hide her astonishment at this answer "You had no relationship with the Uncorn before Kyrie spoke?" she switches her attention from pattern sensw to trying to sense any magics that might be swirling about the charismatic younf man, who may literally hold the world in his hand

"Alright! Alright! Just let me go!" Dirk's prisoner tries once more to get away, and doesn't manage it.

Danielle rolls with advantage 1 at difficulty 20, using occult, magic sense.
The result is a failure.

It's been a hard few minutes, and Danielle cannot quite get up the concentration to look over the two different worlds at once, while staying with her feet in the physical one. "None," the preacher says, "But I have seen the light of truth, and the truth of the sheen on her flanks. Who could deny that? Now, you look tired. You should rest."

Dirk puts the guy down and kicks him in the butt as he runs away.

The cultists watch their leader, who looks at Danielle like he really cares for her wellbeing.

Danielle smiles "i will brother, thank you. Can we speak again/' she takes the young preacher's hand and bows her head to him. If her own bloodline had not been manipulating pattern and magic for centuries, she would be eating from his hand. even as it is her whole worldview has been shaken. Is this an enemy whose hand she holds?

Dirk heads over to Danielle. "Hey sexy?"
